About Guilting People Into Forwarding Emails

smilepop.com

An animated rap about the silliness of getting others to forward emails for good luck or to escape misfortune.

No Bill Gates Money

For a cute animated explanation of why you should not forward emails that threaten you with bad luck if you do not forward email to 10 friends immediately, or that intimate that you will suddenly get enormously rich if you do so,

For a more mundane explanation, consider this:

If every recipient of a good/bad luck email forwarded it to 10 other people within a day, there would be over 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
emails circulating within a year, which would be about
200,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
emails per man woman and child on Planet Earth.

Making reasonable assumptions about the rising number of computers, their rising storage capacity and the average length of an email message, it is clear that every computer on Earth would fill up with these emails and shut down. The internet would grind to a halt.

The reason it has not done so yet is that a lot of people are smart enough to not forward such emails to other people, especially to people they care about.

Recommendations:

First - Disconnect from time-wasting sources of emails. If the email does not lead to a helpful action, you probably don’t need it.

Second - Do not even open an unexpected email if it was not sent directly to you and addressed to you by name. It is probably spam.

Third - Under no circumstances click on a link in an email. If you want to go the site you think they are talking about, go to your browser and navigate there.

Fourth - Never open an unsolicited attachment to an email. It is likely to be a virus.

Fifth - Don’t use “Reply to all." Think about who needs to know and send it directly to them.

Sixth - Don’t exacerbate the feeding frenzy – send and respond to fewer emails and you will get fewer back.

Seventh - Do not ever forward a guilt-based or pie-in-the-sky email to anyone. Ever. Just don't do it.

Fortunately, you are one of the people who didn't learn anything from this posting. Thank God for people like you!
