The demise of the Job System and What Comes NextFrithjof Benjamin
Three major forces are eliminating the job system that has served the developed world for 200 years: automation, globalization and industrial farming. It is at an end now. It is absurd to think that we can turn to exponential economic growth on a finite planet to make up for the jobs lost to automation and profit-maximization. Until recently 80% of people were farmers, who have now lost their work. Technology has been used to ruin the Earth and have manacled people to machines. Now we can spiral backwards and upwards to more self-reliance, more mutual respect. Now we can make 80% of what we really need, like food. Technology gave us freedom and then imprisoned us. We need new kinds of work to make up for the jobs that have been lost. A new future awaits us.
